An Unreasonable Woman

Shirley Deane, now a Winston-Salem local, was born in New York City and was given her first accordion at the age of eight. At 27, she left the United States to work her way around the world playing her own brand of jazz and classical music, living a unique and unabashedly exciting life along the way. Birthday Psalm

At a birthday party for a group of young children, the parents lack of supervision turns dangerous when the birthday boy, Christian, focuses on the unwelcome attendee Cody, whose unearthly ability to charm Christian’s older friends gets him in more trouble than he could have ever imagined.  Student Film – University of North Carolina School of the Arts

Children of Kabul

Directed by: Jawad Wahabzada and Jon Bougher, USA, 24 minutes, Rating: MT

This documentary short takes audiences to the streets of war-torn Kabul, Afghanistan and documents up close and personal the sad, new reality of child labor.  The film follows four young Afghan children as they go about their daily lives diligently working and trying to help provide for their splintered families.  Student Film – Wake Forest University

Ghost of Old Highways

Directed by: Dan Bush, USA, 15 minutes, Rating: MT

This stunningly shot experimental short focuses on a Civil War-era man who is caught in a nightmarish dreamscape, commenting on the destruction done to our own people during this tragic war.  Ghost of Old Highways was shot on location in the North Carolina mountains and is based on the song of the same name from the band Lovett.

NC Shorts 1

Again this year we received many interesting shorts from both students and accomplished filmmakers alike, right from our own backyard.  Therefore, we wanted to highlight some of the local films from North Carolina that came through our doors. These two programs demonstrate the wealth of exciting talent we have in our own state and hopefully we can look forward to seeing much more from these wonderful filmmakers.  These fifteen short films represent four prestigious schools and a number of former film students who have sustained their filmmaking careers with wonderful results.

Queen's Kingdom

Directed by: Jacob Rosdail and Kelly McKenna, USA, 3 minutes, Rating: MT

Any Winston-Salem native will know who Queen Toveia is and where you can find her.  She has been selling hot dogs in downtown Winston for more than two decades and with her unbelievably high spirits and lovely demeanor, she gives more than just physical nourishment to the customers who stop at her corner cart.  Student Film – Wake Forest University

Songs of a Heart

Directed by: James Franklin Gould, USA, 8 minutes, Rating: MT

Songs of a Heart explores the new and unlikely friendship between Reverend Daniel W. Jones, his wife Geraldine and their newly appointed caregiver Annie Bell Ellington.  This sweet film shows how they each provide something special in each other lives, far more than just what the job entails.  Student Film – University of North Carolina at Greensboro

The Parting

Directed by: Alex Moratto, USA, 10 minutes, Rating: MT

Filmed entirely on location in Winston-Salem and using a cast of local non-professional actors, this film follows the life of a young Latino man as he struggles to make ends meet, and is then forced to make a devastating decision regarding the well-being of his son.

Wilbert & Vern

Directed by: Kenneth Price, USA, 9 minutes, Rating: MT

This sweet film highlights the unlikely life-long friendship of two men from Rural Hall, NC.  Wilbert is a blind organ player and Vern has been an organic farmer for over thirty years.  Together they have an entertaining rapport that can only be built over a full life of friendship and mutual admiration for one another.
