Against the Sea (Contra El Mar)

Set in the border town of Baja, Mexico, this short film addresses the deadly nature of deep-sea divers who risk their lives on a daily basis to earn money for their families.  Hector, a young husband who wants to earn enough money to buy his own fishing boat, must confront the fears of his wife when yet another of his friends has an accident at sea.

Cross (Country)

In this very experimental look at the daily lives of random groups of people in the countryside in the Ukraine, Vroda establishes a window into this society through the somewhat connected movements of many differing segments of society from children to adults, from teenagers to grandparents and everyone in between.  Cross was awarded the Palme d'Or for Best Short Film at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival.

Fatakra

Directed by: Soham Mehta, USA, 19 minutes, Rating: MT

When a young Indian family reunites in America after many months of separation and isolation, sparks fly between everyone involved.  The wife believes the husband is not working hard enough to get their life on track, the son thinks his father has essentially abandoned them and the husband is simply trying to please everyone while making sure he can keep his family afloat.

Narrative Shorts 2

Grand voyages and fearless travelers abound in this collection of lively short films, each one endeavoring to discover or recover something glaringly absent from their lives.  In The Trip it’s a search to recover a once passionate romance, while in stories like Fatakra and the Cannes Palme d’Or winner Cross the voyage takes on a decidedly spiritual or existential significance.  Wherever they may start out, there’s no telling where these phenomenal stories will take you!

Stitches

Directed by: Adiya Imri Orr, Israel, 17 minutes, Rating: MT

Amit and Noa, a same-sex couple living in strict Israel, are proud of their relationship, despite the perceived denigration from others, and decide to take their relationship to the next level by having a child together.  However, the night after the baby is born, both women struggle to hide their insecurities about motherhood and find themselves feeling a bit stifled.

The Trip (A Viagem)

António, an elderly retired man, finds himself stuck in a rut of drinking all day at the local bar while his wife spends her entire days watching meaningless TV.  Hoping to generate some passion and spice back into his marriage, António decides to surprise Maria with a weekend trip away in a sporty convertible, but he just can’t seem to find the way.
