Dear God (Cher Dieu)

Directed by: Caroline Mailloux, Canada, 21 minutes, Rating: MT

In the religious town of St. Fidele, many of the townspeople write their prayers to God via postcards.  However, most of those postcards simply end up in the mail room where Vital, the cynical postman, can’t help but read them.  When he discovers one that is a cry for help, this atheist has to draw upon his remaining Catholic knowledge in order to send her signs that God is, in fact, watching.

Narrative Shorts 1

They say everybody needs somebody, and this outstanding block of shorts really takes that axiom to heart.  Anchored by several stories about moments of change or crisis people experience with their most cherished companion—whether it’s a parent (The Chair), a would-be lover (Workers Leaving the Factory), or even a higher power (Dear God)—these short works examine the collective human pursuit for a meaningful personal connection in a variety of surprising ways.

After an outbreak of poisonous mold takes over a small Southern town, one young boy is forced to come to terms with his mother’s mysterious death and his grandmother’s obsession with the recliner she blames for the sickness, as well as the town’s mania surrounding the killer epidemic.

Workers Leaving the Factory (Arbeiter Verlassen die Fabrik)

Directed by: Anna Linke, Germany, 10 minutes, Rating: MT

In a style that recalls the early films efforts of the famous film pioneers the Lumière Brothers, this sweet short film follows Karin, who works in a metal factory and day to day must perform meaningless and routine tasks. When a new co-worker joins the factory, however, her days become much more exhilarating as she awaits his daily greetings.

Yolan's Spring (Yolan No Haru)

Directed by: Laurent Blahay, France, 17 minutes, Rating: MT

Constructed almost entirely of stop-motion still shots, this mystical and inventive short takes place in Yokohama, Japan, where a young mother abandons her son, Yolan, in a hotel.  He is found by Fukimo, the cleaning lady and Hiroschi, the night watchman, who take him in and a friendship ensues between these three atypical characters.
