Based on Arthur C. Clarke’s story “The Sentinel,” this landmark 1968 epic is a mind-bending, sci-fi symphony. Director Stanley Kubrick spent over two years meticulously creating the most “realistic” depictions of outer space ever seen, pushing the limits of narrative and special effects toward a meditation on technology and humanity.

A Little Closer

Directed by: Matthew Petock, USA, 78 minutes, Rating: MT

In a backwater Virginia town, a single mom struggles to raise two unruly boys growing increasingly independent and pre-occupied with the opposite sex.  Petock’s debut feature presents a moving and naturalistic sketch of a working-poor family trying desperately to keep their heads above water.           

A Morning Stroll

Directed by: Grant Orchard, UK, 7 minutes, Rating: MT

Nominated this year for Best Animated Short at the Academy Awards, this inventive film transposes the same bizarre-but-true story of a chicken walking down the sidewalk onto three very different periods in history.  Each version of the anecdote features a different aesthetic style to match the time period, and delivers a witty commentary on society’s diminishing curiosity about the world around them. 

A New Life

Directed by: Adrienne Ostberg, USA, 8 minutes, Rating: MT

This short documentary highlights a program which pairs inmates at the minimum security prison in Winston-Salem with puppies from the Humane Society.  The inmates must learn to train the dogs and the dogs in turn have to learn to trust humans and in this symbiotic relationship, powerful and emotional changes are made in both human and animal alike.  Student Film – University of North Carolina at Greensboro

Liberia has been endlessly suffering a civil war in their country and innocent women and children are bearing the brunt of the repercussions.  Vele, a 17-year-old mother, desperately wants to learn to read and write to keep up with her 7-year-old daughter, and to initiate a brighter, more independent future in order to leave the painful past behind.

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective

Bring your canine companion down to BB&T Ballpark for a night to watch the film that made Jim Carrey a household name. Filled with ridiculous stunts that only Carrey could pull off, this film follows the pet detective, Ace Ventura, as he searches for the missing dolphin mascot of an NFL football team. Admission is FREE, suggested donation of a can of pet food and/or $2 for the Forsyth Humane Society.

After School Special

Directed by: Jacob Chase, USA, 9 minutes, Rating: MT

In this vignette penned by master playwright Neil LaBute, a Chuck E. Cheese-like pizza palace sets the stage for a seemingly innocuous encounter between two single parents while their children play.  Things are not as wholesome as they appear however, leading to a shocking conclusion in the most wickedly twisted way imaginable. 

Against the Sea (Contra El Mar)

Set in the border town of Baja, Mexico, this short film addresses the deadly nature of deep-sea divers who risk their lives on a daily basis to earn money for their families.  Hector, a young husband who wants to earn enough money to buy his own fishing boat, must confront the fears of his wife when yet another of his friends has an accident at sea.

Among Giants

Directed by: Chris Cresci, Sam Price-Waldman and Ben Mullinkosson, USA, 14 minutes, Rating: MT

Farmer, an environmental activist, decides to battle the elements, fight desperate isolation and even potential danger as he lives one hundred feet up in a giant redwood tree on the California coast.  Farmer has chosen this peculiar life in an effort to help fight against the clear-cutting that is ravaging the forests.
